| Training
in Interventional Radiology:
The role of Virtual Environments |
The
Past, Present and Future of Medical VR Presentation by Professor
Nigel John |
Dr
Derek Gould will give a presentation discussing the current
status of interventional radiology and the requirements
for change in interventional training.
Interventional radiology (IR) involves imaging guidance
of needles, guide wires and catheters to achieve therapeutic
outcomes. In the UK, however, IR training is an apprenticeship,
and logistical and risk issues indicate a need for training
processes that don't involve real patients. Fixed models
lack realism and animal models lack pathology and have political
problems in the UK. Virtual environments offer a solution
for surgical training that would remove the early IR learning
curve from patients.

An
overview of how advanced computer graphics and virtual
reality is poised to make a significant improvement to
the working environment of a medical practitioner. Examples
and demonstrations will be used to illustrate the talk.
Prof. Nigel W. John is the Head of Visualisation Research
at the University of Wales, Bangor.
He was formerly head of the Manchester Visualisation Centre
and has managed the University's Visualisation Immersive
Projection Laboratory (VIP Lab) - a state-of-the-art facility
for VR and High Performance visualisation. |

| Introduction
to Primal Pictures
Presentation by Simon Barrick |
Medical
Visualisation at IBM
Presentation
by Peter Waggett |
| Primal
Pictures is a new breed of medical education company which
brings together knowledge of two technically advanced areas:
3D computer graphics and medical imaging technologies. At
the heart of Primal's enterprise is the production of the
world's first complete 3D computer graphic model of the
human body. Simon Barrick, from Primal Pictures, which is
based in Central London, will be presenting at SAND2003. |
|
|
| In
the field of medical image data there are a series of technical
developments that are going to revolutionise the way that
this data is used and how it can help with Computer Adided
Detection. The vast majority of images (X-Rays, Mammograms)
are stored and accessed on photographic film which leads
to limited use and access and large problems with storage
and loss. This talk will outline the challenges associated
with converting use of this data to an on-line digital archive
and allowing for collaborative use. |
