Training in Interventional Radiology:
The role of Virtual Environments
The Past, Present and Future of Medical VR Presentation by Professor Nigel John
Dr Derek Gould will give a presentation discussing the current status of interventional radiology and the requirements for change in interventional training.
Interventional radiology (IR) involves imaging guidance of needles, guide wires and catheters to achieve therapeutic outcomes. In the UK, however, IR training is an apprenticeship, and logistical and risk issues indicate a need for training processes that don't involve real patients. Fixed models lack realism and animal models lack pathology and have political problems in the UK. Virtual environments offer a solution for surgical training that would remove the early IR learning curve from patients.

An overview of how advanced computer graphics and virtual reality is poised to make a significant improvement to the working environment of a medical practitioner. Examples and demonstrations will be used to illustrate the talk.

Prof. Nigel W. John is the Head of Visualisation Research at the University of Wales, Bangor.

He was formerly head of the Manchester Visualisation Centre and has managed the University's Visualisation Immersive Projection Laboratory (VIP Lab) - a state-of-the-art facility for VR and High Performance visualisation.

Introduction to Primal Pictures
Presentation by Simon Barrick
Medical Visualisation at IBM
Presentation by Peter Waggett
Primal Pictures is a new breed of medical education company which brings together knowledge of two technically advanced areas: 3D computer graphics and medical imaging technologies. At the heart of Primal's enterprise is the production of the world's first complete 3D computer graphic model of the human body. Simon Barrick, from Primal Pictures, which is based in Central London, will be presenting at SAND2003.
In the field of medical image data there are a series of technical developments that are going to revolutionise the way that this data is used and how it can help with Computer Adided Detection. The vast majority of images (X-Rays, Mammograms) are stored and accessed on photographic film which leads to limited use and access and large problems with storage and loss. This talk will outline the challenges associated with converting use of this data to an on-line digital archive and allowing for collaborative use.

9:15 Opening Address
Andrew Davies, Welsh Assembly Minister for Economic Development and Transport will address the conference.

9:30 Introduction to Swansea Animation Days 2003
Martin Capey, Head of School of Digital Media, Swansea Institute, will welcome delegates to the SAND 2003 event and introduce today's line-up.

9:45 Medical Visualisation at Primal Pictures
Simon Barrick, Head of Graphics at Primal Pictures, will be discussing how the company has dealt with the problems of accurately reproducing a complete human being in CG, including an introduction to the techniques used to produce the models.

10:45 Coffee

11:30 IBM Research Division: Medical Visualisation
Peter Waggett from IBM's Emerging Technology programme will be joining us at SAND 2003 to discuss this company's research and development in the field of medical visualisation. The Emerging Technology programme is charged with making sure that new ideas and research are applied to problems and are delivered as working solutions.

12:30 Lunch and Networking

2:00 The Past, Present and Future of Medical Virtual Reality
Professor Nigel John, from the University of Wales, Bangor, will present an overview of how advanced computer graphics and virtual reality is poised to make a significant improvement to the working environment of a medical practitioner.

2:50 Training in Interventional Radiology: A Role for Virtual Environments
Dr Derek Gould, from the Royal Liverpool Hospital, will give a presentation discussing whether virtual environments offer a solution for surgical training that would remove the early IR learning curve from real-life patients.

3:40 Tea

4:10 Teaching Computer Animation to Undergraduates and Postgraduates
Professor John Vince, from Bournemouth University will discuss the issues associated with teaching computer animation to undergraduate and postgraduate students, addressing the problems of teaching a discipline which is in a permanent state of flux. He will illustrate his talk with a cross-section of student animation.

5:00 Closing Address
Martin Capey, Head of School of Digital Media, Swansea Institute, will round up the day and tell us what there is to look forward to in tomorrow's event.

5:10 Networking Opportunity and Screening of Best of Ffresh
We will be showcasing work from the Ffresh student moving image competition in the evening of Day 1. This is an opportunity to view animation and video work produced by students from across Wales.

Creating a Believable Performance (Using Maya)
Will Byles, Head of CGI at One, will run this practical character animation workshop using Maya. The workshop is intended to help animators create believable performances from a range of different models.

Acting For Animators
Ed Hooks, author of 'Acting for Animators' (Heinemann 2000), has pioneered acting workshops that are specifically designed for the needs of the animator. These workshops are practical 'hands-on' sessions which teach acting theory in a fun, painless and useful way.

Introduction to Flash MX with John Hill
This workshop will introduce animation in a vector based environment using Macromedia Flash MX. Delegates will work through various methods of animation in Flash as well as gaining an understanding of some of the programming and interactivity involved in the software.
