Motion Capture at Artem Digital

Richard Hince, head of Studio at Artem Digital, will be giving a presentation at SAND 2003 relating to the work of this leading motion capture studio located in Perivale, west of London. Motion capture has evolved into a flexible, cost effective production tool over the last few years. Using MoCap animators can now achieve high quality, volume animation within a modest budget.

Artem Digital is equipped with both Optical and Magnetic capture systems and has recently been involved in the production of Sony games 'Getaway' and 'This is Football 2003', as well as several motion capture projects for film and tv, including an Italian production of 'Pinocchio' and a documentary on Egypt's 'Valley of the Kings'.





Computer vision: Creating new animated content from the real world with Image Metrics

This company's work includes new innovations in facial motion capture, facial imaging for automated identity recognition, and computer aided radiology.

Shelley Page (DreamWorks) and Bruce Steele (Glassworks) will be discussing what animation companies are looking for from freelance animators and students wishing to enter the industry. Known for the Aero mouse and the Sprite goblin, this company has scooped many industry awards, including the coveted Best Commercials Animation award at this year's London Effects and Animation Festival (LEAF) and BTAA Craft awards for both Best Animation and Best Computer animation (for the Aero Mouse).

He will discuss how and why MoCap technology, which has its roots in biomechanics, was adopted by the entertainment industry, and why biomechanical principles are still so important.

5:10 Networking Opportunity and Screening of Best of Ffresh
We will be showcasing work from the Ffresh student moving image competition in the evening of Day 2. This is an opportunity to view animation and video work produced by students from across Wales.






Creating a Believable Performance (Using Maya)
  Will Byles, Head of CGI at One, will run this practical character animation workshop using Maya. The workshop is intended to help animators create believable performances from a range of different models.

Acting For Animators
  Ed Hooks, author of 'Acting for Animators' (Heinemann 2000), has pioneered acting workshops that are specifically designed for the needs of the animator. These workshops are practical 'hands-on' sessions which teach acting theory in a fun, painless and useful way.
