Training
in Interventional Radiology:
The role of Virtual Environments
|
Teaching
Computer Animation
Presentation by John Vince
|
Dr
Derek Gould will give a presentation discussing the current
status of interventional radiology and the requirements
for change in interventional training.
Interventional radiology (IR) involves imaging guidance
of needles, guide wires and catheters to achieve therapeutic
outcomes. In the UK, however, IR training is an apprenticeship,
and logistical and risk issues indicate a need for training
processes that don't involve real patients. Fixed models
lack realism and animal models lack pathology and have political
problems in the UK. Virtual environments offer a solution
for surgical training that would remove the early IR learning
curve from patients.

|
John
Vince will discuss the pedagogic issues associated with
teaching computer animation to undergraduate and postgraduate
students. His talk will address the problems of teaching
a discipline which is in a permanent state of flux, and
how such problems are overcome within the NCCA. In particular,
he will discuss the skills and academic qualities expected
of applicants, teaching strategies, staff and environment,
and the expectations of the computer animation sector.

Motion
Capture at Artem Digital
Presentation by Richard Hince
|
The
Past, Present and Future of Medical VR Presentation by Professor
Nigel John
|
|
Richard
Hince, head of Studio at Artem Digital, will be giving
a presentation at SAND 2003 relating to the work of this
leading motion capture studio located in Perivale, west
of London. Motion capture has evolved into a flexible,
cost effective production tool over the last few years.
Using MoCap animators can now achieve high quality, volume
animation within a modest budget.
Artem
Digital is equipped with both Optical and Magnetic capture
systems and has recently been involved in the production
of Sony games 'Getaway' and 'This is Football 2003', as
well as several motion capture projects for film and tv,
including an Italian production of 'Pinocchio' and a documentary
on Egypt's 'Valley of the Kings'.

An
overview of how advanced computer graphics and virtual
reality is poised to make a significant improvement to
the working environment of a medical practitioner. Examples
and demonstrations will be used to illustrate the talk.
Prof. Nigel W. John is the Head of Visualisation Research
at the University of Wales, Bangor.
He was formerly head of the Manchester Visualisation Centre
and also managed the University's Visualisation Immersive

Image
Metrics and Computer Vision:
Creating new animated content from the real world
|
Medical
Visualisation at IBM
Presentation
by Peter Waggett
|
|
In
this talk, Nick
Perrett, Marketing Director, will discuss how Image
Metrics is beginning to apply its core computer vision
technology to facial animation with companies like EA
& Sony Computer Entertainment and what the future
for character animation and animated content based on
computer vision techniques will look like.
Image
Metrics' ability to automatically extract full shape,
texture, appearance and motion data from any class of
highly deformable or complex object, will empower a number
of applications that were previously impossible.
|
|
|
| In
the field of medical image data there are a series of technical
developments that are going to revolutionise the way that
this data is used and how it can help with Computer Adided
Detection. The vast majority of images (X-Rays, Mammograms)
are stored and accessed on photographic film which leads
to limited use and access and large problems with storage
and loss. This talk will outline the challenges associated
with converting use of this data to an on-line digital archive
and allowing for collaborative use. |
|
| Some
of the technologies we will be using to solve these challenges
include: GRID computing to allow for distributed and scaleable
access to the data and query by content to allow for image
analysis. |
